Bala-Dherai
Bala-dherai (Bala-dherai) is a significant archaeological site located northeast of Langar village, Khwaza-khela, on the right bank of the Manawrhay-khwar stream, which separates Langar from Janu.
Documented by Stein (1930), the site contains ancient structural ruins comparable to those at Kakhi-dherai, suggesting it was part of Swat’s Buddhist settlement network. The remains include scattered walls, foundations, and pottery, typical of Gandharan- era habitation or monastic complexes. Unlike major stupa sites, Bala-dherai may have been a smaller fortified or residential site, possibly linked to trade routes along the Manawrhay- khwar. Stein’s brief description highlights its archaeological value, though no systematic excavations have been conducted.

Current Condition
Bala-dherai's Gandharan-era structural ruins remain partially visible but face growing threats from agricultural expansion and erosion, with no recent archaeological assessments conducted. The site falls under the jurisdiction of the KP Directorate of Archaeology & Museums, which has failed to initiate documentation, protective measures, or excavations despite Stein's 1930 identification of its archaeological significance.
