Mansehra Rock Edicts
The Mansehra Rock Edicts, located in Mansehra, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Pakistan, are a set of fourteen inscriptions of the Mauryan emperor Ashoka, dating back to the 3rd century BC.
These inscriptions, carved into three boulders, are written in the Gandhara culture's ancient Kharosthi script and reflect Ashoka's promotion of Buddhism and his moral law, known as "dharma." After his remorse over the destruction caused by his military conquests, Ashoka turned to Buddhism and sought to spread its teachings. The edicts are part of a larger group of Ashokan inscriptions that describe his efforts to encourage moral conduct across his empire. The site is positioned near the Karakoram Highway on the ancient Silk Route, making it historically significant in terms of both cultural and religious exchange. While the Mansehra Rock Edicts are under threat of environmental degradation and erosion, efforts are underway to conserve them, including the installation of protective canopies. The site is currently on the tentative list for UNESCO World Heritage status.
