Dir Museum (Chakdara)
Dir Museum, also known as Chakdara Museum, is located in Chakdara, Lower Dir, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and was established to preserve Gandhāran Buddhist relics excavated between 1966–69 by the University of Peshawar.
Initiated by Capt. Rahatullah Khan Jaral with government support, the museum is designed in a fort-like architectural style using local Malakandi stone. It houses over 1,444 Gandhāran artifacts, including Jātaka tales (Dipankara, Syama, Visvantara), scenes from the Buddha's life (birth, renunciation, enlightenment, first sermon, and parinirvana), miracles like Sravasti and the taming of the wild elephant, relic caskets, stupa models, and life-size Buddha statues. The museum also includes an Ethnological Gallery (established in 1977) with 498 objects such as traditional weapons, manuscripts, jewelry, musical instruments, furniture, and wooden architectural elements reflecting the cultural heritage of Dir’s tribes.
