Garhian ( Lal Chak Stupa Monastery)
Garhian, also known as the Lal Chak Stupa Monastery, is an archaeological site located in the Haripur district of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Pakistan.
It dates back to the 1st to 5th century CE and is part of the rich Buddhist heritage in the region. The site consists of four small mounds, which contain the remains of a modest Buddhist settlement, including stupas, shrines, and monasteries. The best-preserved structure is a small monastery located in the northern part of the site, which stands between 2 and 2.25 meters high and includes chambers. To the southeast of this monastery, about 35 meters away, is a stupa surrounded by a rectangular compound. The stupa has a square plan and features a broad flight of steps on its northern side. The site is protected by the Antiquities Act of 1975, and its archaeological significance is recognized in publications such as Archaeological Sites and Historical Monuments Protected Under the Antiquities Act, 1975 by the Federal Department of Archaeology & Museums, Government of Pakistan. The site offers a glimpse into the early Buddhist civilization of Gandhara.
