Kaldarra (Dargai)
Kaldarra, also called Qaldara, is a significant historical village located northwest of Dargai in Malakand District.
It gained archaeological importance when Waddell discovered a long Kharoshthi inscription there, later studied by Deane and preserved in the Lahore Museum. The inscription, carved on a stone measuring about 27 inches by 9 inches, records the construction of a water tank by a person named Thaidora, the Datiaputra, in the 113th year, 20th of Śrāvaṇa. A plaster cast of this inscription, along with a Bodhisattva statue, is housed in the British Library. Scholars such as Bühler, Konow, Senart, and Banerji have studied and translated the inscription. Aurel Stein also referenced this artifact in his writings. The site highlights Buddhist community activities beyond monasteries, emphasizing civic contributions like water tanks.

Current Condition
Kaldarra’s Buddhist heritage survives only in museums—its Kharoshthi water-tank inscription locked in Lahore, a plaster cast in London—while the original site lies erased and unmarked under KP Archaeology’s neglect. A digital reunification project and on-site memorial stele could finally honor Thaidora’s civic piety and Gandhara’s forgotten lay Buddhists.
