Lok Virsa Heritage Museum
The Lok Virsa Heritage Museum is Pakistan's national folk and traditional culture museum, located in Islamabad's Shakarparian Hills park. Founded in 1974, it holds one of the largest collections of Pakistani intangible heritage anywhere, craft objects, musical instruments, embroideries, textiles, wooden furniture, and living-tradition documentation from every province.

The adjacent open-air heritage park contains reconstructed vernacular architecture from across Pakistan, including a Balochi tent, Sindhi hut, Kalasha shrine room, and northern mountain home.

The Music Collection
The musical instrument hall is one of the museum's strongest galleries, over 1,500 instruments from every corner of Pakistan, including rare examples of the rubab, chang, alghoza, khamak, and dozens of regional percussion instruments. Demonstrations are arranged for school groups and can be requested in advance.
Craft and Textile Halls
The embroidery and textile galleries cover Sindh ajrak, Balochi mirror work, Hazara Phulkari, Chitral Kalash weaving, and Punjab Khes. Documented with provenance and cultural context, this collection is far deeper than anything in commercial craft shops.
Lok Mela Festival
Pakistan's largest folk arts and crafts festival, held each spring on the museum grounds. 300+ artisans from across the country sell direct, prices are fair, quality is documented, and the atmosphere is a rare chance to meet master craftspeople in one location. Accommodation in Islamabad fills fast during this week.
Planning tip
When to go, Year-round. Closed on Mondays. The annual Lok Mela national craft festival is held on the grounds each April, the largest gathering of Pakistani folk artisans in the country.
Getting there, Located in Shakarparian Hills, 5 km from Islamabad Blue Area, 15 minutes by car. Across the main road from Pakistan Monument.
Allow, 2-3 hours for the museum and outdoor park. 4+ hours on Lok Mela festival days.
