Miani Hor Lagoon
Miani Hor is a large coastal lagoon on the Balochistan coast near Sonmiani, north-west of Karachi, one of the most important wetlands on Pakistan's Arabian Sea shore. Sheltered from the open sea by a long sand spit, its calm waters hold extensive mangrove forests that nurse fish and shrimp and shelter a wealth of birdlife, from flamingos and pelicans to migratory waders following the great Indus flyway.

A Mangrove Nursery
Miani Hor's mangroves are the heart of its importance, a tangle of salt-tolerant trees that protect the coast, store carbon, and serve as a nursery for the fish and shrimp that sustain both the wildlife and the local fishing economy. Gliding through the channels by boat is the best way to appreciate this rich, sheltered ecosystem.
Birds and Turtles
The lagoon is a magnet for birds, especially in winter when migratory flamingos, pelicans, herons, and waders gather in large numbers on the mudflats, a paradise for birdwatchers. The sand spit that encloses the lagoon is also a nesting beach for green turtles, adding to the area's conservation value.
Visiting Sonmiani
The gateway is the fishing town of Sonmiani, where boats and local guides can be arranged for trips into the lagoon. Facilities are basic, so bring water, food, and sun protection, and treat the fragile mangroves and nesting beaches with care, keep to the channels and leave no trace.
Planning tip
When to go, November to February for the migratory birds and the most comfortable weather; the lagoon is hot and humid in summer.
Getting there, Near Sonmiani (Winder), about 90 km north-west of Karachi, roughly a 2-hour drive, partly on the Makran Coastal Highway. Boat trips into the lagoon are arranged locally at Sonmiani.
