Shimshal Valley
Shimshal is Pakistan's highest permanent settlement at 3,100 m, home to the Wakhi people, a community that has lived, herded, and farmed at extreme altitude in the Karakoram for centuries. The valley is reached via a 65 km jeep track cut through a near-vertical gorge, one of the most dramatic access roads in Asia.
Beyond the gorge, the valley opens into green pastures backed by 7,000 m peaks. Distaghil Sar, the highest peak in the Shimshal sub-range at 7,885 m, stands at the valley's head. Marco Polo sheep roam the upper pastures at 4,500 m.

The Gorge Road
The 65 km access track from Passu runs through a near-vertical limestone gorge, crossing the Shimshal River multiple times. Before the road was built (completed in 2003), the village was accessible only by a 2-day foot traverse. The drive is extraordinary but demands a confident driver and a properly equipped 4WD vehicle.
Wakhi Community
The Shimshal Wakhi people maintain a semi-nomadic tradition, families spend summers at the high Shimshal Pamir with their yaks and goats, and winters in the lower village. Homestays are arranged through community tourism initiatives and are the only accommodation in the valley. A stay here is a genuine cultural exchange, not a hotel.
Trekking from Shimshal
The main trekking routes from Shimshal village lead to Shimshal Pass (4,735 m), the Shimshal Pamir plateau, and the Khurdopin Glacier. The Shimshal Pamir circuit is 4-5 days and reaches some of the most remote high-altitude terrain accessible to trekkers in Pakistan. Marco Polo sheep, ibex, and snow leopard all inhabit this landscape.
Planning tip
When to go, June to September. The jeep track can be impassable before June snowmelt and after October. The Shimshal Pamir (upper pastures) are accessible July to August.
