Hunza Valley, Attabad Lake & Khunjerab Pass by Road
The Karakoram Highway, driven properly. This eight-day road journey runs the full northern length of the KKH — Islamabad to the Chinese border and back — with unhurried stops where the road earns them. Karimabad and its two forts, Baltit and Altit. Attabad Lake, impossibly turquoise where the mountain fell into the river in 2010. The old Silk Road villages of Gulmit and Passu beneath the Passu Cones, and finally the climb to the Khunjerab Pass itself at 4,700 metres — the highest paved border crossing in the world, snow possible in any month. Nights are spent in GreenPak houses along the valley. A journey for travellers who believe the road itself is the destination; every day of it proves the point.
