Baltit Fort

Baltit Fort has stood above Karimabad for roughly 700 years, the ancestral seat of Hunza's ruling Mirs and the valley's most recognisable landmark. Built and rebuilt in stages with Tibetan and Ladakhi architectural influence, the fort fell into disrepair through the 20th century until a major restoration by the Aga Khan Trust for Culture in the 1990s returned it to something close to its historic form.

Seat of the Mirs of Hunza

Baltit Fort was the residence of Hunza's ruling family until the mid-20th century, when the Mir relocated to a new palace lower in the valley and the fort was largely abandoned. Its restoration in the 1990s, led by the Aga Khan Trust for Culture with input from the last Mir's family, is considered one of the more successful heritage conservation projects in northern Pakistan.
