Bingalai, located between Pacha-kalay and Kuz-Gokand in Gadaizai, Buner district, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Pakistan, is an important but lesser-known Buddhist archaeological site.
According to Aurel Stein (1930), a ruined stupa was found in a ravine named Bingalai, indicating the site's Buddhist religious significance. Later, Saeed-ur-Rehman et al. (1996) also confirmed the presence of similar remains, supporting Stein’s earlier observations. The ruined stupa likely served as a local religious monument within the extensive Buddhist network of Gandhara. Due to the site’s remote ravine setting and lack of formal excavation, its historical significance remains largely undocumented. The site’s location between two significant villages suggests that Bingalai may have once served nearby monastic or trading communities. The absence of protective measures leaves the remains vulnerable to further degradation.
Why go
Bingalai's ruined stupa survives in a fragile state, its remote ravine location offering minimal protection against natural erosion and human interference. The KP Directorate of Archaeology & Museums has never surveyed, excavated, or safeguarded the site—despite its 1930 documentation by Stein and 1996 confirmation by local researchers—allowing this potential monastic outpost to crumble unstudied.
