Kargha-Dherai, Ragast
Kargha-dherai, located in Ragast within the Lalku valley of Matta, Swat, is a historically significant Buddhist site dating back to the Gandhara period.
The site was first documented by Stein in 1930, who identified the remains of a ruined stupa mound positioned prominently on a hillcrest. Alongside the main stupa, Stein noted decayed walls likely representing parts of a vihara or monastery complex. Additional small stupa mounds were scattered around the nearby terraces, indicating the site's use as a monastic retreat. The Buddhist structures at Kargha-dherai were constructed using traditional Gandharan masonry techniques. The hilltop location provided a strategic vantage point over the surrounding valleys. Local oral traditions and the layout of ruined walls confirm this as a center of Buddhist activity. Despite the passage of time, the site's archaeological importance remains undisputed.

Current Condition
Kargha-dherai's Buddhist ruins, including stupa foundations and monastic remains, persist as decaying structures on the hillcrest, exposed to natural erosion and human neglect. The site remains under the jurisdiction of the KP Directorate of Archaeology & Museums, which has failed to implement conservation measures or conduct professional excavations, leaving this important Gandharan monastic complex vulnerable to complete deterioration.
