Tirat (Madian, Jinki-Khel)
Tirat, located in Madian (Jinki- khel) in Swat, is a historically significant Buddhist site linked to ancient legends.
According to Chinese pilgrims like Faxian, Song Yun, and Xuanzang, Buddha once dried his robe at this location after crossing a river. The site contained a large boulder inscribed with Brahmi and Arabic script, identified by Aurel Stein in the early 20th century. Buddha’s carved footprints were also discovered here, with an inscription translated as “The feet of Buddha, the Śākya ascetic.” These footprints are now preserved in the Swat Museum. Tirat once held several stupas and shrines, though many are now lost or buried. The site highlights the religious and cultural significance of upper Swat in ancient Buddhist history.

Current Condition
Tirat’s sacred Buddhist landscape—where pilgrims once venerated Buddha’s footprints and robe-drying rock—now lies erased, its relics fractured between museum storage (Swat Museum) and local destruction, with no active protection by KP Archaeology. Only a memorial reconstruction and pilgrim trail can revive this Xuanzang-documented holy site, reconnecting Swat’s living communities to their Buddhist past.
