Overview

About Swat Valley

Swat runs from Mingora's Gandhara stupas up through Bahrain to forested Kalam, where the Ushu and Utror rivers meet and roads climb to Mahodand Lake. Malam Jabba adds Pakistan's best-known ski slopes on a ridge above the valley.

Drive up the Swat valley from Mingora (Saidu Sharif) through Bahrain to Kalam. Mahodand and the Ushu forest are onward 4x4 trips.

Upper Swat

Kalam is the base for Mahodand Lake, the Ushu pine forest, and the road toward Gabral and Kumrat. Budget time, not distance, the roads are scenic and slow.

Gandhara roots

Around Mingora, the Butkara stupa and Swat Museum trace the valley's Buddhist past, an easy pairing with the mountains above.
