Ghalegay Buddha, Swat
A colossal seated Buddha carved on a great boulder beside the Swat road at Ghalegay, 14 km south of Mingora.
At Ghalegay, a village on the left bank of the Swat River 14 km south of Mingora, a colossal Buddha is carved on a boulder that faces the road. The figure sits in meditation, hands in the dhyana mudra, and the carved face of the rock measures about 6.8 by 3.2 metres; the Department of Archaeology and Museums dates it to the 7th–8th century CE. Beside the statue are the remains of a small cave. Ghalegay itself has its own place in Swat's later history: it was chosen as the first seat of government of Swat in 1849, and in 1915 Miangul Abdul Wadood, the first ruler of Swat State, was crowned here by the village jirga. The great Shingardar stupa stands just down the road towards Barikot.

Visiting today
The Ghalegay Buddha is protected under the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Antiquities Act, 2016. Pair it with the Shingardar stupa nearby and the excavations at Barikot for a morning of Swat's Buddhist heritage.
Planning tip
Best Time to Visit, April–May or late September to November. The Buddha faces the road, so it is an easy stop on the drive up the valley, and soft morning light shows the carving best.
