Why go
- ✦Pine forests
- ✦Ushu & Utror rivers
- ✦Mahodand Lake day trip
- ✦Gateway to Kumrat
On the Ground
Kalam town is the hub for hotels, jeep hire, and trout. From here the valley splits toward Ushu and Utror, green, river-fed, and far cooler than the plains in summer. Roads are scenic but slow; budget time, not distance.
Beyond the Town
Mahodand Lake, the Ushu pine forest, and onward routes toward Gabral and Kumrat are the reason most travellers come. Each is a half- to full-day jeep excursion with a local driver.
Plan It with GreenPak
GreenPak Hotel Kalam sits in the valley as a base for these excursions. Use Plan a trip to combine Kalam with Malam Jabba and the wider Swat circuit.
Planning tip
When to go, May to September for the valley and onward jeep roads; the higher lakes and passes open in summer only.
Getting there, Drive up the Swat valley from Mingora through Bahrain to Kalam (rough in places). Mahodand and Ushu forest are onward 4x4 day trips from town.
Allow, Two to three days to take in Kalam plus Mahodand and the Ushu forest.
