Saidu Sharif Stupa
The Saidu Sharif Stupa, located in the Swat District of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Pakistan, is an important Buddhist site consisting of two terraces built on a hill slope.
The lower terrace, known as the Terrace of the Stupas, features a large main stupa surrounded by smaller monuments, including stupas, viharas, and columns, some of which are adorned with lion figures. The site was excavated by the Italian Archaeological Mission between 1963 and 1982, revealing the stupa's square plan and cylindrical bodies, along with remains of a frieze and other decorative elements. The stupa and its surrounding structures were built in three distinct periods: the first period (25 BCE–1st century CE) showed a symmetrical arrangement, while the second and third periods (2nd–5th century CE) saw a progressive crowding and expansion of the terrace. The upper terrace uncovered the remains of a monastery, which underwent an expansion and later a reduction, signaling a decline of the site. The Saidu Sharif Stupa offers significant insights into Gandhara’s Buddhist history and architecture.

Current Condition
The Saidu Sharif Stupa’s preservation is passively managed by KP authorities, leaving its delicate sculptures vulnerable to weathering and neglect. Proactive measures like 3D mapping and heritage zoning could transform it into a model for Swat’s Buddhist sites.
