Kotona Bampokha Site
Kotona Bampokha is a Kushan-period Buddhist archaeological site located in Buner District, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
Situated between Bampokha and Kotona villages, the site covers an area of approximately 500 by 400 meters. It likely served as a monastic or religious complex, potentially featuring stupas, votive shrines, or meditation spaces. The region’s historical connection to the Gandhāran Buddhist tradition suggests the site played a role in the spread of Buddhist teachings. Its relatively intact condition makes it valuable for archaeological study, offering insight into the architectural and cultural landscape of Kushan-era Buddhism. The surrounding terrain and access routes imply its integration into a broader network of religious activity. Despite this, no formal excavation has yet taken place.

Current Condition
Kotona Bampokha’s 500×400-meter monastic complex—one of Buner’s last largely intact Kushan sites—is being looted trench by trench under KP Archaeology’s inaction, its stupas and shrines ransacked by illegal diggers while scholarly potential bleeds into the black market. Only immediate guard deployment, drone surveillance, and a community-led watch can prevent this Gandharan time capsule from being hollowed out forever.
