Nawagai (Karakar, Barikot)
Nawagai (Karakar, Barikot), Swat is located southeast of Barikot, along the road passing through Karakar Valley towards Buner.
Aurel Stein visited Nawagai in 1930 and noted little archaeological significance except for a spring enclosed within an ancient walled conduit, indicating the area’s historical infrastructure. However, Nawagai gained prominence later when Barger and Wright excavated the site in 1941, revealing it as a significant Buddhist monastic complex. Further excavations by Mian Said Qamar in 2004 confirmed Nawagai’s importance, uncovering structural remains tied to Gandharan Buddhist traditions. Historical records also mention a local episode where the Wali Sahib of Swat ordered nearby villagers from Natmaira, Nawagai, and Najigram to search the region’s pre-Islamic ruins for hidden treasures, although no discoveries were reported. Nawagai today stands as one of the key Buddhist complexes in the Karakar-Barikot archaeological landscape.

Current Condition
Nawagai’s Buddhist monastery—once overlooked by Stein but now recognized as a major Gandharan complex—faces a slow death under KP Archaeology’s indifference, its excavated walls crumbling back into the Karakar Valley’s soil while unchecked local digging risks unreported looting. Only urgent site consolidation and community co-management can preserve this rediscovered jewel of Swat’s sacred landscape.
