Kalkata Girarai is a Buddhist archaeological site from the Kushan period, located in Buner District, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
Situated near Girarai village on the way to Kalkata, the site spans an extensive area of about 700 by 650 meters, suggesting it may have been a major religious or monastic complex. It likely contained stupas, meditation platforms, and residential quarters for monks. The location, close to the Karakar Pass, highlights its historical importance as part of the Gandhāran Buddhist network. Its size and position imply a thriving Buddhist community during the Kushan era. Architectural traces and surface features reflect sustained occupation and spiritual activity. Despite its historical value, the site has not been archaeologically excavated in detail.

Current Condition
Kalkata Girarai’s vast 700×650-meter monastic city—a Kushan-era hub near the Karakar Pass—is being consumed by houses, farms, and playgrounds under KP Archaeology’s paralysis, its stupas and monks’ quarters fragmented by daily life without a single boundary marker or conservation plan. Only urgent zoning enforcement, LiDAR mapping, and community co-stewardship can salvage the core of this Gandharan metropolis before it vanishes beneath modern Girarai.
