Mahaban (Chamla)
Mahaban, located in the Chamla region of Buner District, holds important ancient Buddhist remains.
Scholars like Cunningham and Deane believed Mahaban was the site of the historical Mahavana monastery. Deane documented significant ruins across the mountain, including Shahkot ruins, suggesting the area’s religious importance. Part of an ancient inscription found here mentions the "deposit of a relic," indicating Buddhist ritual activity. Aurel Stein also confirmed widespread remains throughout the Mahaban hills. Although once theorized as the location of Aornos, this idea was later rejected by Stein. Mahaban reflects the early spread of Buddhism in Buner's mountainous zones.

Current Condition
Mahaban’s Buddhist ruins—including its relic deposit site and possible Mahavana monastery—remain unprotected across the Chamla hills, their inscriptions eroding and structures crumbling under KP Archaeology’s neglect. Only systematic surveys and relic recovery programs can reclaim this ‘lost’ sacred landscape described by Stein and Cunningham.
