Skardu
Baltistan's principal city and the practical gateway for Shigar, the Kachura lakes, Deosai, and expeditions into the central Karakoram.
Skardu is a city and travel base in its own right, not another name for Deosai or the whole of Gilgit-Baltistan. Set beside the Indus in a broad, high-altitude basin, it is where travellers organise road journeys toward Shigar and Khaplu, lake days around Kachura and Satpara, and longer expeditions toward Askole, the Baltoro, Concordia, and K2.
Why go
- ✦Independent city and Baltistan travel base
- ✦Gateway to Shigar, Khaplu, and Deosai
- ✦Access to Satpara and the Kachura lakes
- ✦Logistics centre for Baltoro and K2 expeditions
A City, Not a Region
Skardu sits within Gilgit-Baltistan but is separate from Gilgit city, Hunza, and the province-wide destination guide. Its airport, bazaar, hotels, workshops, and transport services make it the main operating base for Baltistan.
Build Short Day Trips Around It
Shigar, Satpara, Upper and Lower Kachura, and the cold-desert landscape can be explored from Skardu without combining them into one location record. Each keeps its own identity, coordinates, and visit information.
Plan for Mountain Disruption
Flights and roads are weather-sensitive. Keep schedules flexible, confirm access before departure, and avoid presenting expedition transfer times as guaranteed.
Planning tip
When to go, April to October for the city and nearby valleys; June to September for Deosai and the highest trekking routes.
Getting there, Fly from Islamabad when weather allows, or reach Skardu by road through the Karakoram Highway corridor. Keep a buffer day around flights and long mountain transfers.
Allow, Allow at least two nights for the city and nearby sights; longer when using Skardu as the base for Shigar, Deosai, Khaplu, or an expedition.
