Stupa of Loebanr
The Stupa of Loebanr, located in the Jambil-Saidu archaeological zone of Swat, was a grand Buddhist structure built on a double platform with three receding storeys topped by a raised dome.
Architecturally impressive, the lower square storey and two circular upper storeys were richly decorated with pilasters, scotia-type bases, torus mouldings, and stairways aligned on the east axis. The stupa also featured a rare inner cell beneath the stairway and a smaller stupa embedded within its core—echoing the design of the Kunala Stupa at Taxila. Constructed using gneiss and schist masonry, the monument demonstrated both engineering skill and sacred symbolism. Reconstructions and surveys by Faccenna, Spagnesi, and others from 1961 to 1993 captured its unique form before its destruction.

Current Condition
Loebanr’s engineering marvel—a triple-tiered stupa echoing Taxila’s sacred geometry—now exists only in Italian expedition archives after being erased by looters. Its destruction must spur urgent protection for Swat’s last surviving mountain stupas like Jurjurai.
