Stupas of Arapkhanchina (Shararai)
Located in the Jambil Valley of Swat, the Arapkhanchina (Shararai) site is a significant Buddhist complex featuring six stupas (I–VI).
These stupas are built in tiers, typically beginning with a square or rectangular base, followed by receding circular storeys, a drum, and a raised dome. Stupa II preserves fine ashlar masonry of talcoschist and schist, along with a large chattravali disc. Stupas I and V contain stepped internal cores that were likely not meant to be externally visible. The best-preserved structure is Stupa VI, notable for its complete hemispherical dome and raised vertical band—rare architectural features that offer valuable insight into stupa construction in Swat. The site lacks pilaster ornamentation, setting it apart from more elaborate stupa sites such as Butkara and Loebanr. Altogether, the scale and variety of structures suggest that Arapkhanchina was once a flourishing religious and monastic center.
