Thareli
Thareli is an early Gandharan Buddhist temple located near Jamalgarhi in Mardan, Pakistan.
Dating to the Kushan period (1st–2nd century CE), it reflects the peak of Buddhist art and architecture under Emperor Kanishka. The site showcases distinct temple design, typical of early Gandhāran religious structures. Nearby Jamalgarhi was a major monastic center, highlighting the region's religious importance. Gandhāra's art blended Indian and Greco-Roman styles, flourishing through Silk Route trade. This era saw Mahayana Buddhism and the first human representations of the Buddha. Excavations at Thareli have revealed sculptures, stupas, and inscriptions. Together, these sites show Gandhāra’s vital role in early Buddhist history.
