Chilam Joshi (Joshi)
The Kalasha spring festival, milk stored for days, processions, and group dancing at the Charso grounds in Bumburet.
Joshi welcomes spring across Bumburet, Rumbur, and Birir. The closing ceremony in Bumburet draws Kalasha from all three valleys for hours of traditional song and dance.
- When to plan
- Mid-May for five days of Chilam Joshi; book flights and guides early, dates are announced by community elders.
- Getting there
- Fly to Chitral, then drive roughly 20 km to Bumburet. For a longer loop, base at GreenPak Hotel Booni in upper Chitral.
Ritual and dance
Milk is stored for days before the festival. Processions move through villages to the Charso dance ground, where men and women perform in traditional dress for hours.
UNESCO landscape
The Kalasha Valleys sit on UNESCO's tentative World Heritage list, a living cultural landscape, not a museum exhibit. Travel with a guide who understands local etiquette.
Respectful travel
Ask before photographing people. Dress modestly. Festival days are religious as well as social, follow your guide's cues at shrines and dance grounds.
