Andan Dheri Stupa, Lower Dir
A great Buddhist stupa and monastery north of Chakdara, its 36 m square plinth and stairway still standing above the plain.
Andan Dheri is an important Buddhist site of the 1st to 5th century, about 7 km north of Chakdara on the road to Dir, just south of Ochh village and opposite Gulabad. Its main stupa stands on a square plinth about 36.5 metres a side, with sixteen surviving steps of its western stairway and part of its dome, and from its top there is a wide view over the plain and the hills around it. West of it lie two kinds of votive stupas, from different periods, and beyond them the monks' cells, the monastery having been larger in its first period and later reduced to its western half.
