Baltoro Glacier
The Baltoro Glacier is 62 km of moving ice in the heart of the Karakoram, the highway that carries every climber and trekker toward K2, Broad Peak, Gasherbrum I, Gasherbrum II, and Concordia. Walking the Baltoro is not optional for anyone heading to the great peaks; it is the approach, and the approach itself is one of the world's great wilderness journeys.
The glacier surface is rugged moraine, loose rock and ice chunks, and the trekking route follows its lateral moraines through an amphitheatre of 8,000 m peaks that changes scale with every kilometre.

The Approach from Askole
Day 1 from Askole reaches Jhola (camping on the river bank). Day 2 crosses the river and enters the Braldu Gorge to Paiju, the last green campsite before the glacier. Day 3 reaches Liligo; Day 4 the Baltoro snout at Khoburtse. From here trekkers walk on or beside the glacier all the way to Concordia (Days 5-6). The route is demanding but non-technical.
What to Expect on Glacier
The Baltoro surface is heavily covered in moraine, loose rocks from the surrounding mountains deposited by glacial movement. Trekking is on the margins where possible, and on the moraine surface when the route requires. Ice pinnacles (seracs) and meltwater streams cross the route. No crampons needed below Concordia in summer conditions.
Permits and Logistics
A Restricted Area Permit is required for the K2 base camp trek, obtainable through licensed Pakistani tour operators. Foreign trekkers must be with a registered guide. Porters from Askole carry all supplies, the porter economy is the backbone of the Baltoro. GreenPak works with experienced Karakoram operators and can arrange full logistics.
