Gondogoro La
Gondogoro La is a 5,585 m glacier pass that closes the loop on the K2 base camp trek, the dramatic crossing that lets trekkers descend from Concordia via the Hushe Valley rather than retracing the Baltoro approach. It is considered one of the hardest non-technical high-altitude treks on Earth: the ascent requires crampons and fixed ropes, the crossing demands an early dawn start to beat afternoon avalanche risk, and the descent into Hushe is steep and sustained.
But the views, K2, Broad Peak, Gasherbrum I and II all visible from the col, are without equal.
Why go
- ✦Summit panorama: K2, Broad Peak, GI, GII all visible at once
- ✦Fixed-rope ascent through seracs
- ✦Dawn crossing ritual, 3am start to reach the col safely
- ✦Descent into Hushe Valley, granite towers and green pastures
- ✦Laila Peak pyramid visible on the Hushe side
The Crossing
Groups leave Concordia camp at 2-3am. The first two hours are on crevassed glacier in the dark with headlamps; the fixed ropes begin where the angle steepens. The col is reached by dawn, in time for the full panorama of the Karakoram's highest peaks in morning light. The descent on the Hushe side is down steep snow and rock to Ali Camp, then on to Khuspang.
Technical Requirements
Crampons, harness, and jumars are mandatory, fixed ropes are installed by the first expedition of the season and checked by guides. No prior technical climbing experience is required, but the altitude (nearly 6,000 m) and the early-morning timing demand acclimatisation and physical preparation. This is not for inexperienced trekkers.
The Hushe Valley Descent
Below Gondogoro La, the Hushe Valley is a revelation, green terraced fields, apricot orchards, and stone villages after days on rock and ice. The descent takes 2 days to Hushe village, then a jeep track leads 4-5 hours to Khaplu and onward to Skardu.
Planning tip
When to go, July to early September only. The pass holds significant snow and avalanche risk outside this window. Most trekking groups cross in July or August.
Getting there, Reached after 8-12 days from Skardu via Askole and the Baltoro Glacier. The pass lies between the Baltoro Glacier and the Hushe Valley. Most groups descend from Gondogoro La into Hushe, then drive back to Skardu.
Allow, The full Baltoro to Gondogoro La circuit is 16-22 days from Skardu. Fitness level: serious mountaineers and experienced high-altitude trekkers only.
