Juro Stupa
The stupa site at Juro near Illam Kaly is an early Buddhist monument situated in a high- altitude area of the Buner region.
With its commanding elevation of 1605 meters, the stupa likely served both as a religious structure and a landmark for traveling monks along ancient mountain routes. The site's architectural form and strategic location suggest it was part of a broader monastic complex or pilgrimage network active during the early Buddhist period, possibly pre-Kushan. As a stupa, it would have enshrined sacred relics and been a focal point for ritual practice. Such structures were central to early Buddhist spiritual and community life. Despite its historical and religious value, the site has not been preserved or protected. Construction of an army post in the area has caused significant damage to the remains.

Current Condition
Juro’s 1605-meter-high early Buddhist stupa—a relic of mountain monasticism and pilgrim navigation—has been partially buried or destroyed by military construction under KP Archaeology’s powerlessness, its sacred alignment and potential pre-Kushan origins sacrificed for security infrastructure. Only geophysical surveys around the army post and negotiation for limited archaeological access can document what remains of this high-altitude spiritual beacon.
