Kanjar Kote Buddhist Complex
Kanjar Kote is a Buddhist monastic complex located in the Kandak Valley near Barikot, Swat.
It features multiple terraced levels with chapels, viharas, small stupas, and a main central stupa. The site includes a unique double vihara built on a single podium with a shared wall and vaulted roofs. Another rare structure is a circular-plan vihara with plastered inner floors and projecting antas. Remains of domed chapels and sculptural fragments were found, though many are damaged. Excavations by Stein, Barger & Wright, and later surveys revealed multiple monastic cells and niches. This isolated, terraced complex resembles Takht-i-Bahi in layout and function.

Current Condition
Kanjar Kote’s terraced monastic complex—with its rare double vihara and circular-plan cells—lies in ruins, looted and eroded under KP Archaeology’s ineffective oversight. Only emergency stabilization and 3D documentation can preserve this Takht-i-Bahi analogue before its vaults collapse.
