The Neelum Valley runs northeast from Muzaffarabad, a river road of pines, suspension bridges, and villages pressed against the Line of Control.

Why go

  • Neelum River road
  • Keran
  • Ratti Gali Lake
  • Sharda

Sharda's Ancient University

The village of Sharda, about 150 km up the valley from Muzaffarabad, holds the ruins of Sharada Peeth, one of the Indian subcontinent's great temple-universities between the 6th and 12th centuries CE, where Sanskrit, astronomy, and the Sharada script itself were taught and copied for a library scholars once travelled long distances to consult. The script that carries its name went on to write both Sanskrit and Kashmiri across the region for centuries. What remains today is a weathered stone ruin above the river, a quiet, little-visited counterpoint to the valley's mountain scenery.

Valley Rhythm

Base in Muzaffarabad or Keran and day-trip north, rushing to Kel in one day skips the viewpoints and riverside walks that make the valley worth it.

Border Sensitivity

The Neelum runs parallel to the Line of Control, stay on marked roads, carry ID, and follow local guidance near military checkpoints.

Planning tip

When to go, April through October for valley access; winter snow can close side roads to Keran and Sharda.

Getting there, Drive from Islamabad to Muzaffarabad (roughly four hours), then follow the Neelum River road north, Keran, Sharda, and Kel each add time and permits may apply near the border.

Allow, Three to five days for a valley loop with side trips to Ratti Gali or Sharda.
