Rakaposhi

Rakaposhi dominates the Nagar Valley at 7,788 m, the world's 27th-highest mountain (12th-highest in Pakistan) but arguably its most dramatically visible. The Karakoram Highway passes within viewing distance for nearly 40 km, and the peak's near-continuous 6,000 m vertical rise from the valley floor creates one of the greatest mountain walls on Earth.

First summited in 1958 by the British-Pakistani expedition via the Southwest Ridge.

Why go

  • 7,788 m, visible from 40 km of KKH
  • One of world's greatest vertical mountain walls
  • Minapin Glacier base camp trek
  • First climbed 1958 British-Pakistani expedition

The Minapin Base Camp Trek

From Minapin village on the KKH, the trek climbs through apricot orchards and terraced fields to the Minapin Glacier, a 2-day route with Rakaposhi's 4 km-wide face filling the sky above. Non-climbers regularly do this trek for the scenery alone.

KKH Photography Stop

The best single roadside view of Rakaposhi is from the Rakaposhi Viewpoint near Diran base above Minapin, a short drive off the highway. Sunrise and late afternoon light on the south face are the prime photography windows.

Combined with Hunza

Rakaposhi sits between Gilgit and Hunza on the KKH, making it easy to include in any northern Pakistan drive. GreenPak Hotel Hunza is a natural base for the approach and return.

Planning tip

When to go, May to October for viewing and base camp trekking; the Rakaposhi Base Camp trek is best June to September.

Getting there, Drive the Karakoram Highway from Gilgit toward Hunza, the peak dominates the skyline from Minapin village (about 40 km from Gilgit). The Minapin Glacier trek leads to base camp in 2 days.

Allow, 2-3 days for the Minapin Glacier base camp trek; a day stop is enough for photography from the KKH.
