Choimus (Chawmos)
The Kalasha winter solstice festival, fire, feasting, and rites that carry the community through the coldest months.
Choimus runs for weeks in the valleys as houses fill with smoke from ritual fires and communities share stored food.
- When to plan
- December through mid-January; confirm Chitral flight and road status before committing.
- Getting there
- Winter access to Chitral can be weather-dependent. Fly when open, drive to the valleys with a local operator, and base at Booni for upper Chitral.
Winter solstice rites
Choimus is the longest Kalasha festival, fires, feasting, and rites that mark the year's turn. Houses smoke with ritual fires; communities share stored grain and meat.
Weather reality
This is not a summer valley trip. Roads and flights can close. Build buffer days and travel only with operators who know winter Chitral.
