A broad freshwater lake and bird sanctuary east of Thatta, filling each winter with migratory waterfowl along the Indus flyway.
Haleji Lake spreads across a shallow basin east of Thatta, fringed with reeds and scrub, and in winter it becomes one of the most rewarding places for birds anywhere in southern Pakistan. Ducks, waders, flamingos, and raptors arrive along the Indus flyway from October onward, and the lake's edges and causeways give long, open views across the water.
Why go
The lake's value is seasonal. From roughly October the migratory flocks build, peaking in midwinter, and by late spring the numbers thin out considerably. Bring binoculars, the best viewing is at distance across open water.
