Sohni and Mahiwal: Across the Chenab

GPGreenPak Editors · 4 min read · October 2026

Sohni Mahiwal is the Punjabi and Sindhi tale of a potter's daughter and the river she crossed for love.

In the Punjabi version, Sohni was the daughter of Tulla, a potter of Gujrat on the Chenab, then a caravanserai on the road between Bukhara and Delhi. She painted designs on her father's pitchers, and Izzat Baig, a rich trader, fell in love with her at the shop. He gave up his trade to stay near her, working as a herdsman, and became known as Mahiwal. Married against her will to another man, Sohni swam the Chenab every night on an earthenware pot to meet him, until one night the pot was swapped for one of unbaked clay.
