His first residence was at bhati Gate from 1900 to 1905. In 1922 he shifted to Mcleod Road and stayed there up to 1935. In 1934 Allama Iqbal purchased a plot of land measuring about 3500 sq.m, situated in Mauza Garhi Shahau, Mayo Road (Allama Iqbal Road). On completion of the house at the site at a cost of R.s 42025/- Allama Iqbal shifted from McLeod Road residence to this house in May, 1935. A rent deed of Rs. 50/- P.M. was signed by Dr. Iqbal in favour his son Javed Iqbal on 21st May, 1935 for use of the front four rooms which remained under his use till his death. It was here that his wife Sardar begum, mother of Javed Iqbal, died on 24th May, 1935. It was also here that Allama Iqbal passed his last three years and breathed his last on 21st April, 1938 in his bedrooms. Keeping in view the significance of the building it was converted into a historic House Museum where the relics of the great Philosopher Poet of the East re properly preserved and projected for public view.

Iqbal spent most of his adult life in Lahore. He lived at Bhati Gate from 1900 to 1905 and on McLeod Road from 1922. In 1934 he bought a plot of about 3,500 square metres at Mauza Garhi Shahu, on what is now Allama Iqbal Road, and moved into the completed house in May 1935. His wife Sardar Begum died there that same month. He lived his last three years in the house and died in his bedroom. The house is named for his son, Javed Iqbal.

Planning tip
Best Time to Visit, October to March. Lahore's summer is fierce and the Walled City offers little shade; December and January can be heavily smog-bound.
Getting there, All within Lahore. The Walled City monuments — the gates, Mariam Zamani, Wazir Khan's Baradari and Hammam — sit close enough to walk between; Shahdara, Baghbanpura and Mughalpura are a short drive out.
Allow, Thirty minutes to an hour at each; a full day for the Walled City circuit.
