The 1,336 m pass between Swat and Buner, where Akbar's army suffered its worst defeat in 1586.
The Karakar Pass (1,336 m) crosses the hills between Swat and Buner, with a view down into the Buner valley from the top. The 45 km road from Pir Baba to Barikot climbs to it through pine forest by way of Elum Ghar.

About
In February 1586 the Yusufzai under Kalu Khan destroyed a Mughal army here, killing its commander Birbal and many thousands of soldiers: the worst disaster of Akbar's reign.
History
The Mughal expedition against the Yusufzai of Swat and Buner ended at Karakar in February 1586. Estimates of the Mughal dead run from about 8,000 to 50,000, among them Birbal, one of Akbar's closest companions.
