Karez System Cultural Landscape
Across Balochistan's arid plains, the karez system channels mountain groundwater to villages through gently sloped underground tunnels, often running for kilometres before surfacing, without a single pump, relying entirely on gravity. It is one of the oldest continuously used irrigation technologies in the world, and in Balochistan it is still what village life is built around: social standing here is measured by a share of karez water, not landholding.
