Urs of Bahauddin Zakariya

Three days at the Multan shrine of Bahauddin Zakariya, who brought the Suhrawardi order to South Asia: pilgrims, qawwali and a city holiday.

Bahauddin Zakariya (around 1170 to 1262), known as Baha-ul-Haq, established the Suhrawardi Sufi order in South Asia and made Multan one of its great centres. His urs is held over three days each year at his mausoleum beside Multan Fort, with pilgrims from across Pakistan and beyond, qawwali and langar; the district declares a local holiday.

When to plan
The urs follows the Islamic calendar and moves about eleven days earlier each year: the 786th began on 31 July 2025 and the 787th on 20 July 2026. The Punjab Auqaf department and Multan district announce it.
Getting there
The shrine stands on the old citadel mound of Multan Fort in the centre of the city. Multan has an international airport and is on the M-4 and M-5 motorways.

The mausoleum

The tomb is a square of about 15.8 metres inside, with an octagon above it about half its height, crowned by a hemispherical dome. It was almost destroyed in the British siege of Multan in 1848 and rebuilt soon afterwards by the city's Muslims. His grandson Shah Rukn-e-Alam was first buried here too, before being moved to the great tomb nearby.
