Rajgan Mosque, known locally as Rajon ki Masjid, 'the mosque of the Rajas', stands at the northern edge of Khanpur Lake, about 50 km and a ninety-minute drive from Islamabad. It was built in 1872 by Raja Sultan Jehandad Khan, founder of the old village of Khanpur that lay where the reservoir is today, and was the heart of local religious life until the dam was built in the 1970s. From July to September, when the lake is full, the old mosque stands surrounded by water; today it fills mainly for the Eid prayers.
