Skyang Kangri (Staircase Peak)
Staircase Peak, the 7,000-metre neighbour of K2 on the Pakistan–China border, named for the five giant steps of its east ridge.
Skyang Kangri, or Staircase Peak, is a high summit of the Baltoro Muztagh in the Karakoram, standing on the Pakistan–China border about 7 km northeast of K2. Its English name comes from its east ridge, which climbs in five great steps like a giant staircase. The summit and northern slopes are of ice-covered limestone of the Shaksgam formation, rich in Permian fossils such as brachiopods and corals, which meet the K2 gneiss of its great neighbour to the south and west.
