Tomb of Shireen and Farhad, Awaran
A domed tomb near Bela where, local tradition says, the legendary lovers Shireen and Farhad lie together in one grave.
About 15 km from Bela on the road towards Awaran, in Jhao tehsil, a small square tomb with a semicircular dome is honoured as the resting place of Shireen and Farhad. Their story, of the Persian princess Shireen and the sculptor Farhad who cut a channel through the rocky hills for love of her, has been retold for centuries by Sufi poets and runs through Persian literature, folklore and art. Tradition here holds that the two lovers were laid in one and the same grave, and the tomb, dated by the Department of Archaeology to the 12th century, draws visitors who come to remember them.
