Bala Hisar
Bala Hisar is an ancient archaeological mound near Charsadda, about 29 km from Peshawar.
It was the center of Pushkalavati, the capital of ancient Gandhāra. The site dates back to at least the 6th century BCE, with evidence of Achaemenid, Greek, and Kushan rule. Excavations by Marshall, Wheeler, and Dani uncovered pottery, coins, and urban structures. The mound stands 20 meters above the floodplain, showing its strategic value. An inscription from nearby Ghaz Dheri confirms its link to Pushkalavati. Bala Hisar reflects early urban life in the region. It remains a key site for studying Gandhāra’s cultural history.

Current Condition
Bala Hisar’s 2,600-year-old stratigraphy, managed passively by KP authorities, decays without flood controls or anti-looting measures. As Gandhara’s earliest urban center, it demands emergency documentation and a heritage-led tourism plan.
