Pushkalavati, Charsadda
Pushkalavati, an ancient city in present-day Pakistan, was a significant Buddhist site and the capital of Gandhara.
Located near modern Charsadda, it flourished from around 1400 BCE to the 3rd century CE. The ruins include Bala Hisar, an early settlement, and Shaikhan Dheri, a later Indo-Greek city. Buddhist artifacts, such as stupas and manuscripts in Gandhari, have been found here. The site also features the Pālātu Dheri mound, containing stucco Buddhist statues. Chinese pilgrim Xuanzang recorded visiting Pushkalavati in the 7th century, mentioning a stupa built by Emperor Ashoka. The city's history reflects its importance in early Buddhism and its connections to Greek, Scythian, and Kushan cultures.

Current Condition
Pushkalavati's ruins, managed by KP authorities, face decay without urgent excavation and climate-controlled artifact storage. A UNESCO-backed Gandhara corridor could revive its legacy as a crossroads of Greek, Buddhist, and Hindu Shahi cultures.
Planning tip
Best Time to Visit, October to March. The mounds of ancient Pushkalavati near Charsadda, Bala Hisar and Shaikhan Dheri, are hot and shadeless from May to September (Peshawar-valley highs of 36–40 °C) and can flood in the monsoon.
