Empress Market
Karachi's great Victorian Gothic market hall in Saddar, its limestone arcades and clock tower still anchoring one of the city's busiest quarters.
Empress Market rises above Saddar in pale limestone, a Victorian Gothic market hall built between 1884 and 1889 and named for Queen Victoria. Its arcaded halls and clock tower were designed to impose order on the colonial city's trade; well over a century later the building still works as a market, and the surrounding streets remain among the busiest in Karachi.
