Frere Hall
A Venetian Gothic hall of 1865 set in its own gardens in central Karachi, housing a library and Sadequain's vast unfinished ceiling mural.
Frere Hall stands in its own gardens in central Karachi, a Venetian Gothic building of 1865 in honey-coloured limestone, named after Sir Bartle Frere. Built as a town hall, it now holds a library and, on the upper floor, the great ceiling mural Sadequain was working on when he died, an unfinished sweep of allegorical figures that is reason enough to climb the stairs.

Sadequain's Ceiling
The mural upstairs is the building's real draw. Sadequain, among Pakistan's most significant modern artists, left it incomplete at his death in 1987, and the visible working, sections finished beside sections barely begun, is part of what makes it compelling.
