Gupis Fort
An 1894 fort of stone, timber and mud with four three-storey watchtowers, among the orchards of Gupis on the Ghizer River.
Gupis Fort, built in 1894, stands in the town of Gupis on the Ghizer River, about 112 km west of Gilgit. It is a rectangular building with a round or square watchtower of three storeys at each corner, used in turn for storage, living and keeping watch, and joined by passages through the rooms. Its outer wall of dressed stone with timber bracing is about 1.2 metres thick, while the fort itself is of wood, mud and stone around a central courtyard. Its gate faces the village fields and the river, and orchards spread below it.
