Khunjerab National Park
A vast high-altitude protected landscape around the upper Karakoram Highway, distinct from the border pass located within it.
Khunjerab National Park is the protected landscape; Khunjerab Pass is the road crossing and border destination inside that wider landscape. The park spans extensive alpine habitat, so its geographic centre must not be used as a vehicle entrance or border-pass routing point.
Why go
- ✦Separate protected-area identity
- ✦High-altitude wildlife habitat
- ✦Upper Karakoram landscape
- ✦Contains, but is not identical to, Khunjerab Pass
Park Versus Pass
The national park covers a broad protected landscape. The pass is one specific high road crossing. Separating them prevents misleading map pins and lets conservation guidance sit on the park page.
Wildlife Without Guarantees
The park supports high-mountain wildlife, but sightings are never guaranteed. Keep distance, avoid pursuing animals for photographs, and follow local wildlife guidance.
Planning tip
When to go, Late spring to early autumn for road access through upper Gojal; winter conditions close the highest sections.
Getting there, Approach along the Karakoram Highway through Passu and Sost. Confirm park access, road conditions, and the intended viewing area before departure.
Allow, A full day from Upper Hunza for a road-based visit; wildlife-focused visits need local guidance and realistic expectations.
