Astore is the main town of Astore District in Gilgit-Baltistan, at an altitude of about 2,546 metres. It is the base for the valleys around Nanga Parbat and for the road that climbs to the Deosai plains via Chilam. The old Astore–Burzil road to Srinagar has been closed since 1978.
